Making pillowcases

This could also be labelled - A bit of upcycling. I was at the Op Shop (charity or thrift shop for those overseas) and found two high quality, but marked, white cotton sheets for $2 each.  The sheets were cut up around the marks and now two high quality pillowcases for his new pillow are wrapped and under the tree.
For Christmas I have bough Eli a super sized pillow. The photo shows the difference. But could not find pillowcases anywhere at a price I am prepared to pay. With the leftover I made a triangle pillowcase for my pillow on my bed.
This photo is it just being cut out. After making the first one I remembered how easy pillowcases are. So I may use the other sheet and update our tired and old pillowcases.

Mrs Claus and the Elves are hard at work

With Aaron away in Australia visiting and watching Cold Play, the boys and I have been getting on with a massive pile of Christmas making and wrapping. We should have Aaron's present finished before he comes home.
But here is a sneak peek - As Aaron reads this blog we cannot reveal too much.

Yep, destroy that kitchen

Goodness knows what the joke was.

Aaron had lots of one year old boy cuddles and time with his awesome cousin. Here at home the weather was icky and we had the normal Christmas routine of school plays etc.
Eli is on the left of Herod - his bodyguard

We did a few things here too. Went to the stock cars and fireworks night. Visited puppies. It rained heaps and one night it poured over the gutter. So the next day we inspected and cleaned that part of the gutter. But there was not much goo in there, just too much water coming out of the sky!!!

Crazy Christmas at our house

I did not think we would be getting into the Christmas spirit much this year but it is amazing how quickly that turns. The boys and I cleaned the living areas as our job today and then pulled the living Olive tree, we use as a Christmas Tree at our house, into the area.

Fairy V2
Next thing Eli open's the Christmas box and finds the fairy skirt. He says "Oh, Christmas V2". Last year he ended up looking like this! Our Christmas Elf.
Elf V1
Jakob then disappeared into the back blocks of his bedroom and reappeared as slightly creepy Rudolf, who apparently has a penchant for hiding in Christmas trees. So a bit of fun, some laughs and some Christmas feeling happened.
Creepy Rudolf.
Can't wait to see next year and V3!!

Scrappy zip boxy pouch

   Zip pouch, patchwork
Sometime in my surgery and recovery I have lost my makeup purse. I know that when packing for the hospital I decided to put it in a safe place as I would not need it till I went back to work. I am good at safe places so I still cannot find it, it is that safe! So I raided my scrap bag.
I decided to quilt it prior to assembly. I follow a lovely lady called Tiina on her blog Tilkunviilaaja. She makes the most amazing zip pouches with incredible quilting. I am trying to expand my quilting repertoire so decided to tightly quilt it.
A few swirls and some wave like patterns and I was ready to make it into a box pouch.
Pleased with the little project and having it completed an refilled.

Great family camping

In spite of a terrible weather forecast  we decided to head out camping for the long weekend. A bit of a post operation melt down from me meant that we did not go until Friday morning.
The weather was as predicted. Totally wet wet wet. But we had a great time relaxing, reading and I did some stitching. On Saturday night it was clear enough for a fire to toast marshmallows and do baked potatoes on the fire. So a glass of gorgeous port and my wet sock removed. I was toasty and warm on the inside and out!
We had a visit from my brother and sister-in-law and kids. They got soaked but had a good time. We were not to know that a day later they would be staying with us again due to another massive series of earthquakes with a tsunami, which meant they were evacuated from their home yet again. Love having them but it is under such awful circumstances.

Dilbert the Diplodocus

stuffed diplodocus
Aaron is going to Brisbane area in Australia for the Cold Play concert and it is going to coincide with Luca's first birthday. So I whipped out the Melly and Me patterns I had, consulted with the boys and they chose this pattern. A quick search for some bright fabrics in my scrap bag and then the green from my stash. There was a bit of frustration as the gusset of the animal did not turn out right so I had to resew that (which also mean removing the stuffing and then restuffing it).
Now wrapped in my current go to wrapping paper - old sewing patterns from the dump shop. Soon to wing it's way from NZ to Australia.

Happy Birthday Luca

Recycling - now funky Christmas decoration for my craft room

When I went to my quilting retreat I knew I would need a couple of little projects to do when tired. I took all my old thread spools and my bag of scraps. I should have taken a glue gun as that would have been quick and easy, but I did not so I stitched the material onto the spools.
I think I saw this idea either on Crazy Mum Quilts or Cluck Cluck Sew, but as I can't seem to trace it I cannot accurately credit the idea.
So now it is above the window over my sewing machine, decorating the craft / computer room.
I love that it is using something normally thrown out. The first Christmassy (and to be honest it will probably be permanently up there) thing in the house.

Refashion - summer hat from linen shirt

This hat pattern I have made before out of natural linen and I wear it all the time. I had a black linen shirt and knew I wanted a black hat with polka dots. It was actually quite tricky getting enough material for a hat, due to curves, from the shirt - but I did it. I do think I am going to have to put a thin red ribbon around the seam between the crown and brim just to spark it to life a bit.

I was taking new photos as I just could not get the photo of me edited right. Eli saw me and volunteered to model. Although the linen was black someone said to me "you have made a green hat". Sure enough in direct light it has a greenish tinge somehow, I am a bit gutted by that.

Really pleased with the hat. This is now my third one and I have adjusted the original pattern so much that I almost feel I can call it my own.

A 15 minute refashion

From this teatowel
refashion
To this cute apron

I love retro caravan stuff, even though our good old caravan is not retro it has a lot of retro bits in it. Anyway, last January my mother gave me a couple of caravan themed tea towels when she visited us whilst camping. I love love them but they are far too good to use to dry dishes.

In my current state of recovery I want to do craft but it needs to be quick. I spied the tea towels sitting on my sewing desk in my "to do" pile. (Well the visible "to do" pile, I actually have a "to do" cupboard!!!). Iron back the corners and stitch them down. Stitch on some grossgrain pink ribbon around the neck and some white for the ties. Ta Da... all done.

But now I think it is too nice for the caravan, so I have hung it in the pantry to use at home and dream of camping.

A one hour craft project

heart shape pot holder
Well it was meant to be a one hour project but it took me three days! These are heart shaped pot holders for a birthday present for a very dear friend who is turning 70. One of her favourite flowers is pansy. In my current recovery state only a little bit could be done every day. And even then I once forgot to mirror the heart shape so had to make another side.
I used the template from "A spoonful  of Sugar" blog. I did not read the instructions or the how to as I had decided to do the top piece using the quilt as you go technique.

finished product, bit of a struggle getting the lighting right.

The underneath I used some wool, then heat reflective fabric left over from making an ironing board, then batting and then lining. I do not want her hands to get burnt. Tip of the day - make sure the heat reflecting fabric faces towards the outside of the finished pot holder.

How to make your own plant rooting hormone

While my sister was here with me on one of our walks she picked a pile of young willow branches from the river. We brought them home and put them into half a bucket of water. It is just under the bark that all the goodness lies. This is where they get asprin from and is also a great starter for any cuttings. I always used to buy rooting hormone from the garden centre until I found out that willow is essentially the same thing (just not dried and in a container).

So once the willow has steeped for a while I put a pile of cuttings into the water of the ugni berry. This has two common names Chilean guava and NZ Canberry. It is not a cranberry but is the closest thing we can grow and the flavour both fresh and after a light stewing is stunning. Anyway the ugni berry cuttings are all planted up to do their thing as I want to use it to hedge the raspberries. So with the leftover water I soaked the punnets that I am planting my cucumber and courgette (zuchini) seeds into. Lots of people are spending money at the moment on seaweed liquid as a plant starter - but hey just pick some willow and get the same result!

My first outing since surgery was for Aaron's birthday. Date night (earliest date night ever - 5pm as I fade after 7pm)

We went to the Polo bar and restaurant. It was great.

Jakob has been the best company for me during recovery. He has accompanied me on all my walks. Being spring the blossom trees (cherry) are amazing and planted in groups of three all around our suburb. Jakob just kept stopping to look at them as the petals were drifting down like confetti. I thought that wedding couples should be stopping for photos.

A gorgeous break in Rarotonga

Woo hoo, A holiday with no kids for 11 days. Bliss, relaxing and warm! BTW it was an early 20th wedding anniversary present to ourselves....
