Messenger Bag

Eli saw a messenger bag in the shop and fell in love. I did not at $159.00!!!! So I bought some black drill, a chunky zip and some thick cotton for overstitching and set too. A couple of D rings from an old bag that had fallen apart and it was all done.

Eli has taken it everywhere since I came home from retreat having finished it. I now want one for myself!!!

Minky dressing gown for my son

Recently Eli and I had a mum and son day. When we were in one of the shops we spied the most amazing soft cuddly minky fabric. Eli had been wanting a soft dressing gown so we bought it home and whipped it up. It was really quick to make as I used satin bias binding that was premade to finish the edges and I did not line the collar area.

I had an adult dressing gown pattern but it was far to large, so I used the general gist of the pattern and drafted my own. All things considering I am quite happy with it. The photos are not the best as Eli insisted on giving me all his modelling poses!!!

Mum, I want to sew....

5.30pm, dinner was in the oven and I had half an hour to get a bit of my sewing done when Eli came in and said that. Well what could I do but assist.
Although the photo is not too good, on the left is the initial drawing
So I asked him what he wanted. He was very specific.

  • I want to have my own pillowcase
  • I want my name and a drawing on it
  • I only want it to be the stitching (darn - here I was thinking we could just do some iron on applique)
So he drew the picture, we cut a strip of white cotton, he traced the picture on and then.....I taught him how to use the freehand darning foot on my machine to do the black embroidery to create his design.
relaxing with his pillow after dinner.

Once that was done (yes I burnt the carrots to the bottom of the pan because I had forgotten about dinner - thank goodness for frozen veges!!) Eli sewed the structure of the pillowcase, zig zagged all the seams and then ironed it. Viola - One pillowcase.

I am so proud of him. Only 8 and using the freehand sewing feet. But more so that he knew exactly what he wanted and was able to execute it.

Sewing Kit for my son

Well with Eli being really excited about quilting and using the sewing machine, I knew what he needed for his birthday. He had asked me to make a lanyard like the one I use with my snips on the end. So I have sewed him a little boxed zip pouch with his name on it. I used the material that he used on his quilt.

Then I sewed a Lanyard out of the same material and just made it shorter than mine. Added a pin cushion and pins, a tape measure, quick unpick and it is now all wrapped up for his birthday.

box zip pouchEli has never particularly focussed on his birthday but this year he has been counting down since 61 days before. So I had to add a photo of his countdown. I am a bit worried that his birthday will not live up to his expectations. So I am planning lots of little envelopes to appear on the hour with different things to do next (like a sort of day long treasure hunt).

In later years I will not be able to post before a birthday. But thankfully at the moment he does not read my blog unless I open it for him!

A gorgeous break in Rarotonga

Woo hoo, A holiday with no kids for 11 days. Bliss, relaxing and warm! BTW it was an early 20th wedding anniversary present to ourselves....
